Buzzing Slovenia Of Bees and People

The exhibition as part of the Slovenian Culture Days 2023, the 19th European Culture Days, at the Museum of European Cultures (MEK) shows both the tradition of Slovenian beekeeping and innovations from the fields of urban beekeeping and sustainable design.

Green Slovenia is one of the most forested countries in Europe with a rich diversity of plants from the Adriatic to the Alps - a true bee paradise! Since 2018, on Slovenia's initiative, 20 May is World Bee Day. Did you know that Slovenia is the country with the highest density of beekeepers in the world? Slovenian beekeeping and honey products are part of the national culture and stand for living traditions, unique craftsmanship, sustainable use of resources and the harmonious coexistence of humans, animals and nature. But persistent droughts and the use of insecticides in agriculture threaten the integrity of nature and thus the well-being of the bees.

The exhibition is accompanied by a dense four-week programme of events. The Slovenian Cultural Days take place in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia Berlin, the Slovenian Cultural Centre Berlin (SKICA Berlin), the Slovenian Tourist Office, the Slovenski etnografski muzej and the Čebelarski muzej Radovljica.
