Exhibition: France Prešeren and Slovenian Romanticism

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

In the coming years, the Freies Deutsches Hochstift also wants to focus more on European Romanticism. A start will be made with Slovenia, guest country of the Frankfurt Book Fair 2023.

Slovenian Romanticism, with its emphasis on folk poetry and national meaning, developed under the influence of the French Revolution, the German Romantics and the Italian Risorgimento. Probably the most important literary figure of his era was France Prešeren (1800-1849). A cabinet exhibition at the German Romanticism Museum is dedicated to him in cooperation with the National and University Library of Slovenia and the Slovenian Cultural Centre Berlin.

The life and work of the poet, his literary roots and his influence on the coming generation of poets are presented on the basis of letters, translations and poetry manuscripts. The exhibition shows a selection of the first and most significant manuscripts and editions by France Prešeren and Luiza Pesjak, which are kept in the National and University Library in Ljubljana, as well as the historical context of Prešeren's work and the important legacy the poet left to Slovenian and European culture.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a reading with writer Ilma Rakusa (22 November, 7 pm) and a curator's talk (5 October, 7 pm).
